Welcome to Alect Driving School
Alect Driving School is a small, local driving school founded by David Abreu and based in Sydney's Inner West. We teach people of all ages and backgrounds to drive safely and confidently, whether you are picking up the keys for the very first time, getting ready for your practical driving test, or coming back to driving after a long break.
Every learner is different, so every lesson is different too. David takes the time to understand where you are starting from and what you want to achieve, then builds each 60-minute lesson around that. Nervous learners are always welcome. There is no shouting, no rushing and no embarrassment, just clear explanations, plenty of practice and useful feedback you can act on straight away.
We offer manual and automatic driving lessons at clear, advertised prices, plus a driving test preparation and car hire option for test day. Lessons start from your home, school or workplace in suburbs across the Inner West and surrounding areas, including Strathfield, Burwood, Ashfield, Marrickville and Newtown.

Meet your instructor
Meet David, your driving instructor
David Abreu founded Alect Driving School and is an experienced, certified driving instructor who teaches in both manual and automatic cars. He is known by his students for a calm, friendly manner and for feedback that actually helps: what went well, what to work on next, and how to fix it.
David's approach is simple. Start where you are, practise the skills that matter most for you, and build up gradually until safe driving feels natural. First-time learners get the basics explained clearly and without judgement. Learners preparing for their test get honest practice on the things examiners look for. Drivers returning after a break, or getting used to driving on the left, get a refresher that respects the experience they already have.

Learner drivers are welcome from their very first hour. You learn in the school car, one-to-one with David.

We confirm a time with you
David checks availability and gets back to you by phone or email to agree on a time and pickup point. Nothing is locked in until you hear from us.

Learn at your own pace
Your first lesson starts with a chat about your experience and goals. From there, each lesson builds on the last, tailored to where you are up to.
Skills and confidence
What you can learn with David
Lessons draw on these themes depending on your experience and goals. You will not cover everything in one lesson, and you will not be pushed ahead before you are ready.
Building a foundation
Preparing to drive, vehicle controls, moving off and stopping, steering, changing gears, observation and reversing.
Traffic and parking
Simple traffic first, then parking of all kinds, then busier roads and intersections once you are comfortable.
Low-risk driving
Speed management, road positioning, decision making and spotting and responding to hazards early.
Building experience
Night driving, wet weather, motorway and city driving, and preparing for the driving test.

Yes. David teaches in both a manual and an automatic school car. Each lesson runs for 60 minutes. If you are not sure which to choose, mention it in your booking request and David will talk it through with you.
How much do lessons cost?
Automatic lessons are $70 and manual lessons are $80 for 60 minutes. Driving Test Preparation & Car Hire is $190 and includes a one-hour preparation drive and use of the car for your test. See the pricing page for details and ask David about anything not listed.
Is my lesson confirmed as soon as I send the form?
Not yet. The form sends David your preferred lesson, date and suburb. He then checks availability and contacts you to confirm a time. If you need an answer quickly, calling 0414 840 063 is the fastest way to book.
Which suburbs do you cover?
Lessons are available across Sydney's Inner West and surrounding suburbs, from Strathfield and Burwood to Marrickville, Newtown and the city fringe. Use the suburb search or view the full list. If your suburb is not listed, ask David and he will let you know whether he can help.
I am nervous about driving. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Nervous learners are very welcome. Lessons go at your pace, begin in quiet streets and build up gradually. You will never be pushed into traffic you are not ready for.
I already have a licence from overseas. Can I take a few lessons?
Yes. Experienced drivers who are new to Australian roads, or who want to get used to driving on the left, are welcome. Mention your situation in the booking form so David can plan a refresher around what you already know.
